Morgan Stanley: The Mobile Internet Report. The short and shorter summaries.

A very involved but important report. I like it right from the title. Mobile, especially with the advent of the smart phone is the internet, afterall. Some seem to think of it as a different animal altogether.

Some highlights:

  • Wealth creation and destruction is material in new computing cycles.
  • We are now in the beginning of the 5th cycle. Tech cycles tend to last about 10 years.
  • Mobile is more than just phones. 'Mobile' being the key word.
  • Mobile is ramping faster than the desktop internet did and will be bigger than most think.
  • Video is driving rapid growth in mobile internet traffic.
  • If Skype were a carrier, it would be the largest in the world (521MM registered users).
  • Momentum favours the iPhone. Products with the most/best apps win.
  • Usage is about data. iPhone use is 45% voice.
  • When consumers are empowered by the internet, usage changes occur rapidly.
  • New business models are created during technology changes.
  • In place billing systems should create better monetization opportunities than the desktop internet did.
  • Rapid ramp of mobile internet usage: Some companies will win big, even massively, while many others will wonder what just happened.
